In June, employees from across the company joined Host’s service team and Green Team for a volunteer cleanup with the Anacostia Watershed Society at Anacostia Park, helping protect one of our region’s most important natural resources.

The Anacostia Watershed Society is a local nonprofit dedicated to protecting and restoring the Anacostia River and its watershed through advocacy, education and hands-on restoration efforts. Following a welcome and volunteer briefing, volunteers learned about the organization’s work before heading out along the shoreline to begin the cleanup.

What made the day especially impactful was the conditions volunteers faced. A major rainstorm the night before had washed large amounts of litter onto the riverbank, creating an unusually challenging cleanup. Thanks to the team’s hard work and determination, the event became the most successful cleanup our team has participated in to date.

Our Impact:

• 450+ pounds of trash were removed from Anacostia Park
• 20+ full bags of litter and recyclables were collected
• 579 bottle caps were recovered and will be donated to RESTORE, a student-led organization at the University of Maryland, where they will be transformed into a mural that raises awareness about plastic pollution through creative reuse
• Cleared larger debris from the riverbank, including tires, traffic cones, clothing and more

 

Together, our employees helped protect a vital natural resource and contributed to a cleaner, healthier Anacostia River for the community today and future generations to come. The effort reflects Host’s commitment to environmental stewardship and to making a lasting positive difference in the communities where we live and work.
